FAHRENHEIT 451 BY RAY BRADBURY

Guy Montag, the main character of Fahrenheit 451, also represents the theme of isolation and alienation. Guy's occupation is that of a fireman, but instead of putting out fires he sets fire to houses that contain books. "While the books went up in sparkling whirls and blew away on a wind turned dark with burning." (Bradbury 3-4) In the society in which Guy lives books are banned from owning or reading. Guy has a similar feeling to Winston's, in that he is unsure and questioning of his society. Guy is fairly well off financially, has a wife, and has friends as co-workers, yet is also very isolated. Everything that the government encourages the people to do while at work and away from it acts to distract the people from thinking too much or needing too much.

People drive fast cars and watch mindless television in the majority of their free time. They feel comforted by these excuses for social interaction, yet are in fact completely isolated from one another. "How did you get so empty? he wondered. Who takes it out of you?" (44) Guy attempts to talk to his wife about what he is concerned with, yet is met with a blank reaction and an uncaring for anything except the TV. Guy realizes his isolation when even his wife, the closest person to him, cares more about the TV characters that she watches everyday, which she calls her family, than him.

In 1-2 paragraphs respond to the post describing:

1. The connections between what you have just read about “1984” and what you have read thus far in F-451.
2. What are the connections between these novels and the society we live in today?

  1. 1. In each novel, a lone hero breaks out of the mind-numbing atmosphere of a totally controlled world where everyone is spied on constantly by the government. Montag and Smith are both workers whose mission is to keep the control in place. Montag and his fellow "firemen" go to homes where people are believed to be hiding books, and burn down books and homeowners together. Smith has a more abstract task to perform for the government of Oceania, ruled by a shadowy figure called "Big Brother." A member of the Outer Party, mainly consisting of intellectual workers who work to erase any items of history that conflict with the Inner Party's philosophy and to insure that all society members are thinking in conformity with Big Brother's wishes, Winston Smith does damage to the public's memory of any real past at all by deleting all unorthodox documents referring to history,

    2. While the outer signs of most societies today cannot be directly compared to the conditions found in each of the novels, there is plenty in the news of the day to warn us that some version of those two worlds may be on its way. Recent revelations of the extent of the government's listening in to telephone conversations, reading of e-mails, and monitoring of all internet activity suggests that the foundations of the kind of world the two authors predicted are being constructed to a certain extent. We should, as citizens, be as vigilant as we can in viewing these developments through a critical lens. Education, with emphasis on the nurturing of independent thinking and the courage to question authority, is needed now more than ever.

  3. In the 1984 book is about a guy who lives in a society where the law is so inappropriate. You can't do anything with out the government not seeing. So the main character of the book writes a journal where he writes downs his thoughts and personal information of his society. I think the main character of this is going to die at the end of the book. The book Fahrenheit 451 is similar to this book in so many ways. They also have a corrupted government who tries to hide the truth and fear for the public to rebel. In the story a group of firemen creates fire in these hidden libraries so they can burn all books. The reason of this is because these books have important information about life that the government do not what the public to find out. These two books are very similar because they have very complicated system were people live like an army life and there is no peace. Both worlds are full of wars, and you can get murderer for saying and thinking the wrong figures.

  4. Both of those two books are talking about people's life in our future. In the limited society, our knowledge will be control by the government. When we look at our history. Many governments or leaders want more and more power from people. They want to control people's thinking. one of a good way is limited book to read. even right now, a lot of countries control their media, newspaper, television and books.

  5. In each novel are talking about where totalitarian state controls every aspect of life, even peoples thought. also they where talking about interconnections between language and American society roles. Moreover, they do what ever they wanted. Also the government were ruling the world and controlling everything and 1984 they where talking about express is that of near despair about the future and how history change.
they were present our future correctly, the revelations of the extent of the government's they are listening in to telephone conversations, also they are reading emails, and monitoring of all internet activity .

  6. Scott David 1. Their are some similarities between the two books, such as has a lot to do with society. Society has a way that is followed by each book.in both books they can be highly political and propaganda use. An example of the propaganda is making it seem reading is not a positive choice to do.
    2. I think their are both negatives and positives about protecting our future in these books. If reading is trying to be destroyed or taking away, this will impact the education of the youth. They seem to have corrupted fireman because of what they do on the jobs, such as setting a fire instead of taking out a fire. Burning books can take away our history.

  7. both books talk about how people cannot take decisions by themselves. In contrast, they have to follow the government rules, and do what the government encourage.People in those books cannot give their opinions, or do what they really want to do. also they do not have any right to learn from books. in general, knowledge was prohibit. in 1984 people cannot speak out or think against the government. For example, in F451 the main character who is a fireman is forced to start the fire, instance to extinguish it. He has to burn all the books because people may learn for it and stand up against the government. Government has all the power and control, so people live in fear and silent. Both principals characters know that something is happening between the society and the government.

  8. 1) The connections between "1984" and "Fahrenheit 451" they both are implying a futuristic plot. They both foresee that the government will not want any enlightened people or people who think for themselves, such indicating that the government controls everybody and everything. These books also have a character that breaks a way from the government and veers out to their own path of acknowledgment. Another aspect that you can compare is that these controlling societies want to wipe out the past and keep the people on the narrow path of mind controlling and brainwashing.

    2) Believe it or not many of the connections from these books come into fruition today. One that comes to mind is the fact that everything is owned and run by a select elite few, so in a way like the book they only give out information that makes you believe in the way that they think forcing you to support them. These novels are foresseing the horrible future of mind control and a lot of this mind control is coming through media. In fact there is conspiracy theory i read upon it was about mind control the operation was called "MK-ULTRA". It was in the 1950's where the CIA ran a mind control project on communist spies,so in essence that was over 60 years ago so God knows the mind control ablity the the CIA and the government have today and if they are using it on civilians. These books can foresee the future and the fact that people agree with these books now today more than when they were made is telling us how much the people are in process of most if not all of these claims coming true. So citizens need to understand and be more sagacious to what is going on. We all have to know what we are heading into and not be lost or we would succumb to the governments tricks and plans if these things do happen so be aware!

  9. There are some commons between two novels. There is a restriction toward people in two novels, and the authorities try to brainwash the people and manipulate them. The main characters are usually being overheard or watched by someone behind them. And they are chased by the authorities like governments, thought police or senior co-workers. In addition, they have the feeling of the guilty even though they didn't commit any crimes. There is no freedom, no peace in societies in those two books.

    1. In addition, to day in society, we are also manipulated by the authorities by media, news, magazines etc. I believe Behind these massive media, there will be power to control the people's thoughts. In terms of this I can tell the two novels illustrate our future.

  10. 1. The connection in F-451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by George Orwell are both similar based on their ideas and concept about society. In both books, the society they live in is very strict and enforces harsh rules that everyone must follow. Guy Montag, the main character of Fahrenheit 451 is an ironic character. I say ironic because a fireman is someone who takes out fires that may be happening in someones house. Instead Guy is a fireman that starts the fire, and burns houses that has any books inside. In his society, books are banned from owning and being read just like the society Winston lives in, in the book 1984. In Winston society reading books, writing books, or even having a train of thought is banned. It is a crime to do so called the thought crime. Both society's are suppose to not read books but watch television and listen to the radio of the voices of their higher power. The idea that what the higher power says must be followed and enforced.
Both characters face a discovery that changes their mind about their society and soon question authority. In 1984, Winston job is to remove the public's memory of any real past or documents relating to history. However, Winston finds a diary and soon begins to write thoughts about his life and everyday activities, facing a harsh crime both going against his job and society's rules. In fact much people in his society have no memory of when they were younger or activities they were involved in because it wasn't allowed to be remember in words. This diary makes Winston understand that the high power and what rules are enforced are wrong. He beginnings to be his own authority. In F-451, Guy meets a girl who changes his view point on society and about books. He soon is interested in one thing he hated more in life, books. when she dies, he uses books to find a solution to his problems. Both characters eyes beginning to open to a whole new ideas and share the common uncertainty about society. In effect both characters decides to overthrow the status quo.

2.I feel F-451 and 1984 both express similar ideas about the society we live in today. They express this idea that a higher power feeds us, as a society, what we should follow and think what is right and wrong. what we should believe in and not. This concept that people in our society grew up with these ideas of right/wrong because it what was taught to us from generations but based on what? Its based on a higher power that told us and enforced these ideas through generations( just like the two stories). We don't know if they are wrong about these ideas and rules we should follow, we follow them because we are told so. Its implanted in our brains.
I feel both stories express that one day people in society eyes will open and begin to follow their own ideas, question the higher power, and we will able to define and control what we think is right and wrong. we will be the authority of our own ideas. We are being controlled in our minds by an higher power and we don't know it just like Guy and Winston. Eyes will soon open, we will discover the truth.

  11. In both novels, F-451 and George Orwell's 1984 there are similar characters. They live in a very strict society where rules are made and enforced by the government. They do not agree with what is going on in the world they live in. Montag who is a fireman who has to go to people's homes to burn books and Wiston has to help the government of Oceania to delete items of history. Even though Montag and smith participate actively in carrying out their daily missions assigned to them by the government, they constantly question the reasons why they have to what they do. Unlike the other characters in 1984, Wiston is not afraid to seek answers or to do things outside the box in order to figure out what is really going on. Montag also has major concerns which leads him to the realization that everyone is isolated and things are not as they ought to be, especially in his family.

Both books are quite similar to what goes on in our society today. The government installs cameras in public places referred to as 'surveillance cameras' which is supposed to be for 'security' purposes. some of our telephone conversations can be listened to and basically everything you do online 'might' be retrievable by the government. A lot of people in our society are so into watching Tv and reading newspapers that they fail to see what is really going on around them. They are overly distracted by what the government puts out there as 'news' and 'entertainment'. Our society is slowly molding into what is described in both books.

  13. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and 1984 by George Orwell are the two novels that share a similar concept between each. One of the main reasons these two books can connect is that they both have the same problem where people are having trouble to speak out against the government and that is isolating them. The society can’t speak out or share what they want. They have to do what they are told to do by the government because government is the one who controls everything.

In 1984 the “Big Brothers” are controlling the society. People are being watched by telescreens surrounded by them, which monitors everything. Anyone who is not accepting the Big Brothers being a leader will get arrested and even be vaporized. In Fahrenheit 451 the society is forced to burn books because government does not allow them to read books. People have no choice; they have to follow government’s rules. No one cares about society’s opinion; the government wants to be in control of everything

The society we live in now suppose have more freedom but the government is still in control of everything around. Even though we think we have freedom, the government manipulates people to be in control of them.

  14. I think the books 1984 and f-451 have a connection and can accurately predict our future. I say this because in these two books their worlds are controlled and ran by technology, just like our world today in 2013. In 1984 there are huge monitors that watch every movement and sound these civilians do and make. They are watched 24/7 around the clock. In f-451 similar things occur. Instead of these people having walls, they have huge screen monitors everywhere. So because of these screen monitors as walls they are also under surveillance around the clock. I think that this will be our future in 2014. Not to the extreme of big screen's as walls, but the government trying to control us even more through technology. Like tracking devices, they use those things in our time to find out people where abouts (technology). Its crazy but technology has the upper hand in this day and age.

  15. "Fahrenheit 451" is more like the society and the future we live in today. People like Guy, he have been living in a unreal world, wondering the faithful affect and fear the action of consequence. But deeper in mind he wants to find out the truth to free himself The author use the condition to criticized the situation of modern society. The modern technology as the wall which like government's eye,
observe everyone. It just make me think about all there adventure and science fiction films with all the modern technology, they can find everything about one person, even just thoughts, and dreams.
